Слова practice и practise одинаково произносятся и почти одинаково пишутся, что неминуемо ведет к путанице в их употреблении. Особенно коварными они оказываются для людей, привыкших к британскому варианту английского языка. Согласно правилам, practice является существительным, а practise – глаголом. В умении отличить существительное от глагола и заключается основная проблема использования этих слов.

Наиболее распространенная ошибка среди англоговорящих состоит в том, что они не всегда могут разглядеть главный признак глагола – действие. Если это относится и к вам, то впредь просто пользуйтесь этой подсказкой:

  • Глагол practise используется по аналогии с глаголом advise
  • Существительное practice используется по аналогии с существительным advice

В следующий раз, когда у вас возникнут сомнения в употреблении practice/practise, вспомните о правиле выше. Как только вы проведете мысленную параллель между этими четырьмя словами, вся путаница отпадет сама собой. В результате сопоставление должно выглядеть примерно так:

You need more advice (Вам нужно больше советов) / You need more practice (вам нужно больше практики)

Примеры для закрепления слова practice (употребляется в качестве глагола, выражает действие):

  • You will not improve unless you practise (Вы не достигнете совершенства до тех пор, пока не будете практиковаться)
  • I will get time to practise (Я найду время для того чтобы потренироваться)
  • Practise what you preach (Практикуйте то, что проповедуете)
  • A practising physician/lawyer/architect (Практикующий врач/юрист/архитектор)

Примечание: перед окончанием –ing всегда будет стоять согласная –s (например, practising).

Однако американский вариант английского языка предусматривает иное написание и употребление. Речь идет о том, что practice в данном случае будет являться как глаголом, так и существительным. В итоге, на американский манер мы получим следующее:

  • I will get time to practice (Я найду время для того чтобы потренироваться)
  • Common practice (Общая практика)

Безусловно, этот хитрый аспект способен сыграть на руку тем, кто изучает американский английский, но в то же время он смущает приверженцев британского варианта языка. Интересен и тот факт, что американский английский допускает альтернативное употребление слова practise в качестве глагола и существительного.
