Pero no entiendo esa regla. Porque verbos como rain, al formar el presente continuo no duplican consonante.

When you see an -ing form C1VC2ing you can guess the verb: C1VC2V2.

riding —> ridE
noting —> notE

When you see an -ing form C1VC2C2ing you can guess the verb: C1VC2.

ridding —> riD
knotting —> knoT

where C stands for a consonant, and V for a vowel.

sí pero según lo que dice Istriano:
rIDE -> riding
nOTE -> noting
ahora mira: wrITE -> writing (en la escuela me dijeron que si acaban en ‘consonante’ + ‘vocal’ + ‘consonante’ se dobla la última consonante). En ninguno de estos 3 casos sucede así.
Mientras que en:
RID -> ridding
kNOT-> knotting (también es C+V+C y aquí sí se dobla la consonante)

¿Puede ser que sea porque los 3 primeros verbos acaban en VOCAL y estos 2 últimos no? Como ‘forGET -> fogetting’, ‘canCEL -> cancelling’ que tampoco acaban en VOCAL y por eso se dobla la CONSONANTE FINAL.
Gracias y saludos!

forget — forgetting (it’s because the 2nd syllable is stressed)
cancel — canceling (US), cancelling (UK) (1st syllable stressed)
kidnap — kidnaping (?), kidnapping (?) (1st syllable stressed)
develop — developing (US), developping (?) (2nd syllable stressed, not the final one)

My spelling checker underlines cancelling, developping but not kidnapping.
My default language is US English. Nevertheless, some people in the US use cancelling
(the same way they might use theatre instead of theater).

But there is no logic why kidnaping, worshiped, hiccuped should be written with double -pp- in US English
because the stress falls on the 1st syllable.

Pam Peters in The Cambridge Guide to English Usage recommends single L spelling (canceling, snorkeling) for international English [unless the verb ends in -LL in US English: like to fulfill] but she is silent on double p’s.

Que la palabra fuera monosílaba y finalizara en consonante precedida de vocal simple.

But written accents should be the least of your worries. It’s actually a rule, with no exceptions (safe the RAE new stuff). It’s the Latin stress rule, applied to Spanish. It tells you a lot. (like which sounds will never be at the beginning of the last syllable, if the word has antepenult. stress). Yep.

I guess you should worry more about imperf/preter., gustar, subjunct., ser/estar, clitic order, etc.

That is not true. Actually it’s kind of easy to learn how to write phonetic transcriptions in English precisely because there are many rules to stick to. The problem is that the average learner receives no instruction on this.
Perhaps, the most useful rule is that the phoneme schwa /ə/ occurs in 90% of unstressed syllables.

E .g. London is the most organised place that I have ever seen /ˈlʌndən z ðə məʊst ˈɔːɡənaɪzd ˈpleɪs ðət ˈaɪ həv ˈevə ˈsiːn/.

You were probably just exaggerating but I considered that your comment needed this sort of clarification and contribution.

In the same line, I can’t really remember to write phonetic transcriptions in Spanish, but I do remember that it was not that simple and that I had to learn about two rules for each phoneme on average. And, by the way, the whole thing was quite determined by un/stressed syllables and sounds that influenced one another. However, Spanish natives who are not into linguistics do not notice these things.
